Helical piles were first used in 1833 for the support of lighthouses around England.
Thru the years helical piles have been refined and engineered for many applications.
To install a helical pile a hydraulic torque motor is used to install piles. They can
be install by use of hand held torque motors or mounted to excavator type equipment.
The motors can have torques from 2500 to 50,000ft lbs. . The screw pile foundation
system is known for its ease and speed of installation. It is also vibration free.
This makes the pile attractive on sites that are environmentally sensitive.
Accurate Helical piles come in shaft sizes from 1 -1/2"square to 2-3/8"-2-7/8" round up to 4''.
The piles have a configuration of helical plates welded to the helical shaft. The plate
size and plate placement depend on soils, weight of structure and torques. Engineers
can spec a desired torque for helical piles, this is used in the design of pile capacity
or KPS, Helical piles can be engineered site specific. Helical piles should only be
installed by factory trained personnel. Helical piles are also used in place of
concrete drilled piers for new construction and limited access areas.
